Take Five: It Can Save Your Business
by Raymond and Stephanie Yeh
Did you know that as a society we're working longer and harder than ever, but getting less done? Statistics show that most people are spending more time at work, feeling more stressed, and producing less than ever. And if you're a small business owner, chances are that you're working the longest hours and making the least amount of money per hour of anyone in any job sector!
If you are currently working very long hours, chances are that you're suffering from work burnout and you're business is probably suffering, too. One of the most prevalent reasons that small businesses is fail is because business owners don't take time off to relax, revitalize, and take a fresh look at their businesses.
Did you know that the most successful business leaders in the world regularly spend time away from work? Leaders like Bill Gates of Microsoft regularly schedule thinking days away from the office so they can have some "white space" in which to clarify their aims. Many other leaders use meditation and other spiritual practices daily to achieve the same aim.
What's the lesson here? Take time off--it can save your business. It's when you're totally overloaded with work and stress, and feel too guilty to take time off that you most need to step away from your business and gain a fresh perspective.
The great thing is that you don't even need to do anything during your time off. You don't have to think, plan, or hold strategy sessions. The key is to get away from your business. It doesn't matter if you lay on a beach, take a long drive, sit at home reading novels, or take lots of long naps. You just need to take time off.
Give your mind a little space. You'll be surprised how many innovative ideas and how much renewed passion will come flowing in if you just give yourself a little space. Remember: You are the key to your business. If you're burned out, your business will burn out too. When you're relaxed and refreshed, your business will take on new life. Enjoy!
