Seven Questions to Ask Your Employer
by Raymond and Stephanie Yeh
In The Art of Business we highlight the benefits of working for good corporate citizens. Those benefits include job security, excellent health benefits, and stock options. To find out whether your employer is a good citizen, here are seven questions you should ask:
- Is there an ethics program in place?
- Do both full and part time employees qualify for health benefits and stock options?
- How is the company's customer service ranked in the industry?
- How does the company invest in its vendors?
- Is there a corporate giving program and if so, what percentage of profits are donated?
- How does the company protect the environment?
- What is the average rate of return to shareholders?
Companies that do well in all seven categories listed above rank are characterized by longevity, profitability, growth, and top industry rankings (for instance, companies with ethics programs in place rank an average of 50 places higher on the Business Week 500 than companies that don't).
If you're like most people, you spend more than 1/3 of your waking hours at work. Doesn't it make sense to spend those hours wisely at a company that really wants to make a difference in the world?
